The World Needs You To Do What You Love – Four Ways To Amplify Your Creative Life

Based on the Podcast Episode: Love is an Amplifier: Abbie Cardwell on Turning Heartbreak into Self-Love – Episode 68, The Magic of Songwriting with Francesca de Valence

When songwriter Abbie Cardwell began writing the songs that would become her 5th album Love is an Amplifier, she didn’t set out to create a genre-blending, deeply spiritual, self-love-infused record. She simply showed up to write. Week after week, inside I Heart Songwriting Club, she wrote from where she was – sometimes inspired, sometimes resistant, sometimes heartbroken. What unfolded was a body of work that surprised even her.

An award-winning songwriter and performer who has played stages at WOMAD, Splendour in the Grass, and alongside musical legends, Abbie shares with us how she leaned into intuition, allowed herself to experiment, and trusted creativity and where it would take her.
The result being an album that blends electronic textures, banjo, dreamy pedal steel, and rock influences.

Listen below for the full sonic experience, or read below for the key takeaways from our conversation that might spark something for you.

Here are four ways you can draw from Abbie’s process to amplify your own creativity – especially when life feels uncertain, tender, or in transition. Because as Abbie says, “the world needs you to do just what you love”.

1. Lean Into the Mystery (Instead of Trying to Control It!)

Abbie didn’t plan the sound of this album – she followed a path to discover it. When she stumbled upon new sonic landscapes in GarageBand, she didn’t shut them down, even though they felt strange and unfamiliar, she allowed curiosity to lead.

For songwriters, mystery is an invitation – it’s not a threat that you need to control. If something feels new, odd, or unexpected… follow it for ten minutes. Let creativity surprise you. Some of your most authentic work may live just beyond your comfort zone.

2. Show Up Even When You Don’t Feel Ready

Abbie speaks of writing songs she didn’t feel “prepared” to write. She submitted rough iPhone demos to her Club group, writing with whatever energy she had. Those drafts held the seeds of some of her most powerful work.

Waiting to feel ready will often look like not writing at all. Instead, show up. Capture something small. Make a messy start. Songs will only reveal themselves to you when you show up to meet them.

3. Trust Your Emotional Compass

“Just What You Love” was one song in particular that moved Abbie to tears when she wrote it.

Your emotional responses are a powerful guide. If a line gives you the shivers, or a melody brings you to tears, follow it. If a harmonic progression opens your heart space, keep going. If you scream while singing — stay with it. Emotion is evidence of truth, and truth is where great songs live. Remember, some of your most authentic work may live just beyond your comfort zone. ;)

4. Create Your Way Back to Yourself

Life can throw curveballs that leave anyone feeling a little lost. One effective way back to yourself is through creating – whether that’s journaling or morning pages, writing to songwriting prompts, painting, or any regular creative ritual. These simple practices can become steady anchors, especially in challenging moments. Abbie’s journey is a reminder that songwriting is not just about making music – it’s about becoming more fully yourself.

Whether you’re navigating heartbreak, change, or just the busyness of everyday life, making something helps you process what’s happening, release tension, and reconnect with who you are. Creating regularly becomes a reliable way to feel grounded and supported, again and again.
