Known for her timeless hits including The Day You Went Away, Wendy discusses her approach to crafting songs that resonate deeply, her commitment to beauty in music, and how storytelling shapes her artistry. With stories of collaboration and creative evolution, this conversation offers an intimate look at the process behind one of Australia’s most expressive artists. A must-listen for music lovers and creators alike.
Honing Her Craft
Wendy’s path to becoming a celebrated artist was anything but overnight. Despite her early success with hits like The Day You Went Away, she emphasised the years of honing her craft. “Every overnight sensation has been honing their craft for years and years,” she said, highlighting the importance of persistence and dedication.
Before stepping into the spotlight, Wendy spent time as a backing vocalist and session singer, developing her skills by mimicking other voices. This phase of her career wasn’t about finding her own sound but learning to adapt and support others’ visions. However, her talent couldn’t stay in the background for long. Her work with The Rockmelons pushed her to the forefront, where she began performing lead vocals on select tracks.
Finding Her Voice
It wasn’t until a close friend, Ricky Fataar, encouraged her to make a record that Wendy considered creating an album of her own. Even then, she resisted until she knew exactly what she wanted to say. This commitment to authenticity has defined her songwriting ever since. For Wendy, collaboration plays a pivotal role in shaping her music. She credits her co-writers with bringing their own experiences and helping her articulate her thoughts and feelings. “An idea that you bring to a session will continue to gain momentum,” she explained, emphasizing the power of shared creativity.
Writing from Emotion & Experience
When it comes to the emotional core of her songs, Wendy’s approach is clear: songwriting often arises from a need to process deeper feelings. “I don’t feel the need to write when I’m feeling good. It needs to go deeper than happiness,” she shared. For Wendy, songwriting is a way to communicate when words alone aren’t enough. “We write when we need to talk to somebody,” she said, describing how the act of writing helps her navigate life’s challenges.
Lessons for Songwriters
Wendy’s insights reveal a songwriter who is deeply connected to her craft. Her journey underscores the importance of patience, collaboration, and emotional honesty in creating music that resonates
