Cephalopods, Songwriting, and the Beauty in the Mess: A Conversation with Elana Stone

Based on the Podcast Episode: “Cephalopods, Songwriting, and the Beauty in the Mess: A Conversation with Elana Stone – Episode 62, The Magic of Songwriting with Francesca de Valence

In my conversation with Elana Stone, what really stood out was her openness about the chaos of creative life. Touring with Missy Higgins one day, writing songs between baby naps the next—Elana has lived the extremes of being an artist. And yet, what grounds her through it all is songwriting. Not the perfect song, not the finished product, but the act of sitting down and writing in the middle of the mess.

Listen below for the full sonic experience, or read below for the key takeaways from our conversation that might spark something for you.

1. Show Up Anyway

I was in the room when Elana played a gig in Brisbane to just 20 people. And instead of feeling defeated, she decided to give them everything. That night was magic! Songwriting is the same. It’s not about how many are listening, it’s about the courage to turn up.

Give this a go: Next time you write, forget the outcome. Just ask yourself: What would happen if I gave this song everything I’ve got, right now?

2. Use the Time You’ve Got

Elana wrote her song Cephalopods during a 45-minute baby nap window. That’s it. That’s all she had. And it became a standout track on her album. We don’t need hours or days or a whole week – we just need to show up willingly in the little moments.

Give this a go: Set a timer for 30 minutes. See what you can capture in that window of time. No pressure, just play.

3. Share Your Songs

When Elana uploaded Cephalopods to her I Heart Songwriting Club group, the feedback bolstered her and gave her the impetus to take it to the studio. Sometimes we can’t see our own songs clearly until someone reflects them back.

Give this a go: Share your song with a trusted friend. Don’t ask if it’s “good.” Ask what it made them feel. That’s where the magic is.

4. Let Your Values Guide You

Elana spoke about how clear values make her decisions easier – what gigs to take, who to work with, what to say yes to. It can feel lighter when you know what you stand for.

Give this a go: Write down your top 3–5 values as an artist and songwriter. Keep them close. Let them guide you.

Songwriting doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. It waits for us to show up. And as Elana reminded me, when we do—even in the chaos—that’s where the beauty really is.
