We get it — deciding to come on a songwriting retreat can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. So, we’ve put together some answers to common questions we get asked. 1. What actually happens at a songwriting retreat?

Good question. It’s a mix of collaborating with other writers, being in nature, and eating good food. Each day has some structure for activities like the co-writing sessions and creative workshops, but there’s also time to relax, go for a walk, or just sit and solo-write. One of the highlights is a small, relaxed concert we put on each night around the fireplace. It’s a lovely way to share what you’ve created over the day.

2. Do I have to play an instrument or perform?

Not at all. This isn’t a performance-based retreat, and you don’t need to be a whiz on guitar or piano. If you love writing lyrics, melodies, or both — you’re in the right place. You’ll be paired with others for co-writing, so there’s always support, no matter your strengths.

3. What about song ownership and royalties?

Simple — the songs you write are yours. If you co-write with someone, you own the song together, just like any regular co-writing setup. We don’t take any rights or royalties. There’s no fine print trying to claim your work. You can read more in our Terms of Service, but that’s the gist of it.

4. What’s the retreat accommodation like?

We stay at Wild Mountains in the rainforest, in wooden A-frames. It’s shared accommodation and has a very back-to-nature, cabin-in-the-woods feel — so don’t expect luxury, but do expect clean, simple, and peaceful. Meals are vegetarian, home-cooked, and really tasty. If you’ve got dietary needs, just let us know when you apply.

5. I’m kind of new to songwriting — is this still for me?

If you’ve written a few songs before and are keen to keep growing, yes, absolutely. The retreat works best for people who are already writing and want to dive a bit deeper, collaborate, and be part of a songwriting community.
